Hi! Today I’m back with a new segment called „Talking to a writer”. For the first edition, I have an interview with Shelley Coriell! Shelley was very nice and took a bit of her time to answer my questions. Her answers were very funny and nice. You can also read my review of her debut novel, Welcome, Caller, This Is Chloe here.

About Shelley:

I write stories about teens on the edge of love, life-changing moments, and a little bit of crazy. My debut novel, Welcome, Caller, This is Chloe, was released in the Spring of 2012 from the fantabulous folks at Amulet/Abrams Books. A six-time Romance Writers of America Golden Heart finalist, I live in Arizona with my family and the world’s neediest rescue Weimaraner. When I’m not writing, I bake high-calorie, high-fat desserts and listen to voices in my head.

Some questions about your book:

What inspired you to write Welcome, Caller, This is Chloe?
Chloe’s story was ripped straight out of my senior year of high school when a good friend who went to another school was ostracized by her best friends. The gossip and bullying got so bad, she left her school and came to mine. The whole thing was horrible and painful to watch, but also fascinating…like a train wreck.

Has the novel always had its title? If not, what were some potential titles?
Welcome, Caller, This Is Chloe has been the title from day one. I loved the clear radio tie-in, and it felt bold and in-your-face, just like Chloe. At the same time I worried it was too long and lacking subtly, so I brainstormed titles and sent to Dear Agent. Less than shiny gems: Lonely Hearts, Heartbeat of the Ocean (stop groaning, please), and the ever-memorable Shut Up and Listen!Dear Agent wisely rejected these titles, reminding me CHLOE is a very different type of book and should have a very different title.

Which character in Welcome, Caller, This is Chloe did you feel the closest to?
I am a former newspaper reporter and editor of my high school newspaper, so I definitely have a bit of justice-seeking, fiery Clementine in me. But honestly, I most closely identify with Mercedes, Chloe’s brainiac best bud, who would often rather spend time with books than people. 

Do you have any future books planned?
I just submitted to Dear Editor my latest teen girl contemp, GOODBYE, REBEL BLUE. Rebel – short for Rebecca – is the anti-Chloe. She’s a snarky, artistic outcast who reluctantly completes the bucket list of a do-gooder dead classmate and en route meets up with a hot guy with dimples, a gimpy dolphin, and pains from her past.

And now some ‘fun’ questions:

If you could be born as any person in history, who would you choose to be?
Tough one as I’m a huge history buff. Okay…today I’ll go with Cleopatra. It didn’t end too well for Our Girl, but she invented the term, Girl Power.

If you could be a superhero, what power would you like to have?

I want the power to heal broken hearts. There are too many people hurting in this world.

You have to spend a week on a deserted island. What book would you take with you to keep you company?
Just one? That’s brutal. Given your setup, I’ll have to go with some kind of epic saga that lets me lose myself in a rich, unique story world with a huge cast of characters. And since I’ve been on a history kick lately, I’ll go with Colleen McCullough’s oldie but goodie, The Thorn Birds.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Write. Edit. Repeat.

Bună! Astăzi m-am întors cu o nouă rubrică, numită „De vorbă cu un scriitor”. Pentru prima ediție, v-am pregătit un interviu cu Shelley Coriell! Shelley a fost foarte drăguță și a luat puțin din timpul ei pentru a-mi răspunde la întrebări. Răspunsurile sale au fost foarte amuzante și drăguțe. Puteți citi și recenzia mea pentru romanul ei de debut, Welcome, Caller, This Is Chloe aici.

Despre Shelley:

Scriu povești despre adolescenți în pragul iubirii, momente de cotitură în viața cuiva și puțină nebunie.
Romanul meu de debut, Welcome, Caller, This Is Chloe, a fost publicat în primăvara lui 2012 de oamenii minunați de la Amulet/Abrams Books. Am fost de șase ori finalistă Golden Heart la premiile Romance Writers of America și trăiesc în Arizona cu familia mea și cu Weimaraner-ul cu cele mai multe nevoi din lumea asta. Când nu scriu, prepar deserturi cu multe calorii și grăsimi și ascult vocile din capul meu.

Câteva întrebări despre cartea ta:

Ce te-a inspirat să scrii `Welcome, Caller, This Is Chloe’?
Povestea lui Chloe a fost ruptă chiar din ultimul meu an de liceu, când o prietenă bună care mergea la altă școală a fost ostracizată de prietenii ei. Bârfele și batjocura s-au înrăutățit, astfel că și-a părăsit școala și s-a transferat la a mea. Întreaga chestie a fost oribilă și dureroasă de văzut, dar de asemenea, și fascinantă… ca un accident de tren.

Titlul cărții a fost același de la început? Dacă nu, atunci care au fost câteva titluri pe care le-ai avut în minte?
Welcome, Caller, This Is Chloe a fost titlul din prima zi. Mi-a plăcut faptul că era și radio-ul ”incorporat” în el și titlul era clar și îndrăzneț, exact ca și Chloe. Dar în același timp, mi-a fost teamă că era prea lung și că îi lipsea ceva, așa că m-am gândit mult și i-am trimis niște titluri Dragului Meu Agent. Pietre nu foarte prețioase: Lonely Hearts/Inimi Singuratice, Heartbeat of the Ocean/Bătaia Inimii Oceanului (vă rog, nu mai oftați) și cel mai memorabil: Shut Up and Listen!/Taci și Ascultă! Dragul Meu Agent a refuzat amabil aceste titluri, reamintndu-mi că CHLOE este o carte foarte diferită și că ar trebui să aibă un titlu foarte diferit.

Cu care personaj din Welcome, Caller, This Is Chloe te asemeni cel mai bine?
Sunt un fost reporter de ziar și editor al ziarului liceului meu, deci cu siguranță am puțin din doritoarea-de-dreptate, sălbatica Clementine în mine. Dar sincer, mă asemăn cel mai tare cu Mercedes, prietena cea mai bună a lui Chloe, care mai degrabă și-ar petrece timpul cu cărțile decât cu oamenii. 🙂

Ai alte cărți planificate în viitor?
Tocmai i-am trimis Dragului Meu Editor cea mai recentă carte teen girl contemporary, GOODBYE, REBEL BLUE. Rebel – prescurtare de la Rebecca –  este opusul lui Chloe. Este o fată nepopulară,sarcastică, cu o latură artistică, care completează fără prea multă tragere de inimă lista gigantă a unei colege naive care a murit, iar pe drum întâlnește un băiat super-drăguț cu gropițe, un delfin cu dizabilități și dureri din trecutul ei.

Iar acum, câteva întrebări „distractive”:

Dacă te-ai putea naște ca orice personaj din istorie, pe cine ai alege?
O întrebare grea, fiindcă mie îmi place foarte mult istoria. Okay… astăzi voi alege Cleopatra. Nu s-a terminat foarte bine pentru Fata Noastră, dar ea a inventat termenul de Girl Power.

Dacă ai putea fi un supererou, ce putere ți-ar plăcea să ai?
Mi-ar plăcea să am puterea de a vindeca inimile frânte. Sunt prea mulți oameni care suferă în această lume.

Trebuie să petreci o săptămână pe o insulă pustie. Ce carte ai lua pentru a-ți ține companie?
Doar una? Asta e crud. Dat fiind scenariul tău, aș alege o saga epică care să mă lase să mă pierd într-o poveste bogată, unică, cu o mulțime de personaje. Și cum am avut o admirație mare pentru istorie în ultimul timp, voi alege clasicul lui Colleen McCullough, The Thorn Birds (Păsările-Spin).

Ce sfat le dai scriitorilor aspiranți?
Scrie. Editează. Repetă.
